How can one tell the difference between an antique and a recently-slaughtered animal ivory?

Posted By: bigspoon on November 10, 2011 at 2:35 pm

Jason A asked:

I would look up antique ivory sellers, and I notice that there are ivory buyers stating that they would only buy antique ivory. How can you tell the difference between the illegal and legal ones? How can you tell the difference between ivory that is recently taken from the animals, as opposed to ones that are antique?

What should I do with the antique buffet?

Posted By: bigspoon on August 13, 2011 at 8:47 am

caramelqueen asked:

I have an antique side buffet that’s been in my husband’s family for years. It is in desperate need of SOMETHING! I can’t decide if I should just refinish it or apply an antique white distressed finish – which do you think will look best?

Refinishing an antique brass bed-any products I can use to stop the smudges and tarnish build-up?

Posted By: bigspoon on June 9, 2011 at 8:56 pm

adamwitzhoops asked:

The bed is an antique. We are removing old tarnish and it looks nice.
It smudges very easy and I don’t want to keep re-polishing the bed.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Where do I go to get an antique trunk restored?

Posted By: bigspoon on May 16, 2011 at 4:30 am

Kathy asked:

My grandmother has an antique trunk (her grandmother’s hope chest) that she’s looking to get restored/refurbished. Its made of metal, and has some leather straps that need replacing. Also, the inside is just carboard and I think she’d like to put fabric in it. What kind of business should I take this trunk to in order to get it fixed up? I know nothing about antiques, and have absolutely no idea where to begin.

I had my college ring resized recently and it came back with an antique finish (it was originally a natural finish). Is there an easy way to remove the finish or do I have to take it back to the jeweler?
